Phang Nga Bay for First-Timers: What to Book, What to Bring, and What to Actually Expect

If you are going to Phuket and you only do one thing off the island, make it Phang Nga Bay. The bay sits about 90 minutes north of Phuket and is home to one of the most dramatic landscapes in Southeast Asia, hundreds of limestone karst islands rising vertically out of green water, some of them hollow, some of them accessible only by kayak.

What a Full Day Tour Actually Looks Like

Most tours pick up from your hotel between 8 and 9am and return by 4 to 5pm. The day moves through several distinct stops.

James Bond Island, officially named Khao Phing Kan, is the iconic spike of rock that appeared in The Man with the Golden Gun. Every tour stops here. You'll spend about 45 minutes here.

Sea cave kayaking at Hong Island is the highlight of the whole day for most people and the reason to book a full day over a half day. The island is hollow, its limestone walls contain a network of caves and tunnels that connect to hidden enclosed lagoons called hongs, which means room in Thai. You lie flat in a kayak and paddle through passages so narrow the rock brushes both sides, then emerge into a completely enclosed lagoon surrounded by towering walls of karst with nothing above you but sky.

Koh Panyee is a fully functioning Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts above the water. Over 1,600 people live here, descendants of Indonesian fishermen who were not permitted to own land when they arrived 200 years ago. Lunch is served here on most tours.

Panak Island is a limestone karst island known for its network of caves that tunnel through the rock and open into hidden enclosed lagoons.

How to Book the Right Tour

Not all Phang Nga Bay tours are the same and the difference matters more here than on most day trips.

Book a small group tour. Anything described as a shared or joining tour without a stated group size cap is almost certainly a large bus operation with 40+ people. Look for tours that specify 12 people or fewer.

Make sure kayaking is explicitly included. Some tours offer it as an optional add-on. You want it included.

Look for speedboat over longtail boat as the primary vessel. Speedboats get you to the bay faster and give you significantly more time on the water.

Klook is a reliable booking platform with transparent reviews and group size information clearly listed. Read the most recent reviews specifically for guide quality, the guide makes or breaks this trip.

Pro Tip: I booked the evening before and everything went smoothly. But you do run the risk of spots filling up if you wait.

What to Bring

Swimsuit under your clothes. Flip flops or sandals you do not mind getting wet. A hat with a chin strap, it will blow off on the speedboat without one. Sunglasses. Reef-safe sunscreen applied before you leave your hotel. A dry bag and waterproof phone case, this is non-negotiable for the kayaking sections. A small towel. Cash for tips for the kayakers and your guide.

Leave behind: your passport and any valuables. Your laptop. Anything you would be upset about losing to the water.

Practical Notes

Tours include lunch at Koh Panyee as standard on most full day bookings. Confirm this when you book.

Seasickness is a real consideration on the speedboat if the water is choppy. Take this into account if you're prone.

The return journey typically takes 60-90 minutes back to Phuket. You will be tired, sunned, and satisfied. Let that be the whole plan for the evening.

Don't forget to leave a review for your tour guides! This is vital to their business success!
