Sometimes, the best way to explore a new place is to piggyback on another trip. That’s exactly what I did when I found myself in Philadelphia for a friend’s wedding. Visiting friends (especially for weddings) is always a great excuse to check out a new city, and Philly did not disappoint. With just a short window of time, and some local friends’ as a guide, I managed to hit up some of the city’s best sights, eats, and vibes.
Here’s my guide to 5 must-see stops for a whirlwind trip to Philadelphia, with a few tips on how to save money and make the most of your visit. Whether you’re passing through on a work trip, like I was, or stopping in on the way to somewhere else in the Northeast, these stops offer a perfect taste of Philly.
1. The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rocky Stairs
Let’s be honest: You can’t go to Philly without making a stop at the Philadelphia Museum of Art — even if it’s just for the iconic Rocky Stairs out front. If you’ve ever dreamed of doing the triumphant jog up those steps, à la Rocky Balboa, now’s your chance. The view from the top is worth it, with the city skyline stretched out before you.
What to Do:
• Run the Stairs: Channel your inner Sylvester Stallone, run (or walk) up the 72 steps, and throw your fists in the air at the top. It’s basically a rite of passage.
• Snap a Photo with the Rocky Statue: At the base of the stairs, you’ll find the famous bronze statue of Rocky. The line can get long, but it moves quickly.
• Explore the Museum: If you have time, the museum itself is worth a visit. The collection includes everything from Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary art. We were able to say masterpieces like Van Gogh’s sunflowers. P.S. if you go to the cafe within the museum, you cannot feel cute and bring your coffee/drinks as you soak in the art and culture.
Money-Saving Tip: The stairs and the statue are free, so you can still have an iconic Philly moment even if you skip the museum entry fee. Also check out the discounts for the museum. I was able to get me and a friend in for free with a veteran discount.
2. South Broad Street (Avenue of the Arts)
For a quick but vibrant slice of Philly culture, head to South Broad Street, also known as the Avenue of the Arts. This bustling corridor is lined with theaters, public art, and some classic Philly architecture. If you’re into city walks that blend history, art, and energy, this is your spot.
What to Do:
• Take in the Murals: Philadelphia is known for its public art, and South Broad Street has some fantastic murals and installations.
• Snap a Pic at City Hall: As you walk along Broad Street, you’ll get a fantastic view of the towering Philadelphia City Hall, one of the most impressive municipal buildings in the country.
• Catch a Performance: If you have more time, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Academy of Music often have affordable shows and concerts.
3. The Famous LOVE Signs
No trip to Philly is complete without snapping a photo in front of one of the city’s famous LOVE signs. The original LOVE sculpture, created by artist Robert Indiana, is in LOVE Park (JFK Plaza), but you can find a few other versions sprinkled around the city.
What to Do:
• Pose for the Gram: Get that classic shot with the LOVE sculpture in LOVE Park. It’s an iconic Philly moment and a fun, quick stop.
• Explore the Area: LOVE Park often hosts food trucks, pop-up markets, and events, so check out what’s happening while you’re there.
• Find the AMOR Sign: If you have extra time, head to Sister Cities Park to see the Spanish version of the sculpture, AMOR.
Money-Saving Tip: Both LOVE and AMOR signs are free attractions, making them perfect quick (and budget-friendly) stops.
4. K’Far Cafe and Rittenhouse Square
When it comes to breakfast in Philly, K’Far Cafe is the place to be. This Israeli-inspired cafe is known for its incredible bagels, pastries, and coffee. But heads up: It’s popular, so get there early to beat the crowds. Grab your breakfast to-go and make your way to Rittenhouse Square for an al fresco meal.
What to Order:
• Egg & Cheese Jerusalem Bagel: It’s so simple, but I am still dreaming about this little morning bite of heaven.
• Coffee: Strong, delicious, and necessary for a morning in Philly.
They have plenty of other options including pastries, bagels, toasts, salads, bowls, coffees, and morning cocktails
What to Do in Rittenhouse Square:
• Picnic in the Park: Find a bench or a grassy spot and enjoy your breakfast with a side of people-watching.
• Stroll the Square: Rittenhouse Square is a historic park with beautiful trees, fountains, and statues. It’s a little slice of nature in the heart of the city.
Money-Saving Tip: Grabbing a to-go breakfast and having a picnic in Rittenhouse Square is a cheaper (and arguably better) option than dining in a pricey cafe.
5. Swann Memorial Fountain
Last but not least, make your way to Swann Memorial Fountain in Logan Square. This gorgeous fountain, designed by sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder, features Native American figures representing the area’s major rivers.
What to Do:
• Relax by the Fountain: Take a breather and enjoy the spray of the fountain on a hot day.
• Admire the Architecture: The fountain is surrounded by stunning buildings, including the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the Free Library of Philadelphia.
• Get a 360-Degree View: From this spot, you’ll have an incredible view down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway toward the Museum of Art.
Quick Money-Saving Tips for Your Philly Stop
1. Stay with a Local Friend: If you know someone in the area, and it’s an option, crash with them to save on accommodation.
2. Make It a Stopover: Plan your Philly visit as a stop on the way to another destination in the Northeast.
3. Focus on Free Attractions: Philly is packed with free public art, parks, and landmarks that won’t cost you a dime.
